DOMINICAN REPUBLIC : INFORMATION FROM A...Z

Information / News about Dominican Republic :

Shopping :

Craftwork markets are abundant in all the tourist spots. Jewellery is particularly present because the country has two very specific stones : larimar and amber.

Amber : resin from a dead tree, fossilized for millions of years.

Larimar : (Dominican turquoise) : the Dominican Republic is the only country in the world where Larimar is found. Light blue in colour with shades of white or brown, it is a real little beauty.

Black coral : a marine plant which develops very slowly in the seabed at the rate of 2cm every 100 years ! The Dominican Republic is one of the last places in the world where it may be freely sold.

Various craftworks : simplistic paintings, mahogony sculptures, terracotta dolls. The Dominican Republic is a mixture or Spanish and African art. Amongst the objects representative of the local culture, there are handmade dolls, smooth faced ceramic figurines dresses in traditional costume. But also brown rum and very good quality cigars.

Alo to take home with you : rum, cigars or CDs and cassettes of merengue and salsa music. A few names : Juan Luis Guerra, Antony Santos et Teodoro Reyes (bachata), Fulanito with his famous gallando (merengue), La Banda Gorda, La Banda Chula with Que Olla.
